Hot Topic: Understanding Your Dog's Season

As a dog owner, it's important to understand the different stages of your female dog's reproductive cycle, commonly referred to as her season or being in heat. Knowing what to expect makes it far easier to keep her comfortable and safe.

The four stages

• Proestrus — swelling and bloody discharge; she attracts male dogs but is not receptive.
• Oestrus — the fertile window; discharge often lightens and she becomes receptive.
• Dioestrus — the cycle winds down and hormone levels shift back.
• Anoestrus — the resting phase between seasons.

What you might notice

Alongside the physical signs, many dogs show behavioural changes: clinginess, restlessness, increased marking, a dip in appetite, or being more sensitive than usual on walks. None of that is misbehaviour — it's hormones.

Walking and group play

Dogs in season cannot attend Club Walks or group Adventure Walks. It's not a judgement on your dog — it's about keeping every dog in the group safe and settled. Let us know as soon as your dog comes into season and we'll pause her sessions, and where possible offer an alternative such as a drop-in visit or solo walk.

When to call your vet

Speak to your vet if you see heavy or foul-smelling discharge, excessive lethargy, drinking far more than usual, or if a season seems very prolonged. Your vet is also the right person to discuss neutering decisions with.
